12 Iconic Video Game Mums to Celebrate This Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is the perfect time to honour the fierce, loving, and sometimes terrifying mums who shape our lives – and our gaming adventures. While video games often sideline mums, leaving them absent or in the background as father figures take centre stage, the ones who shine bring unforgettable depth, emotion, and a whole lot of badass energy to our favourite titles.
Mums, moms, mummies, mamas - whatever you call them, we want to give them a shoutout…
Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat)
The OG female fighter and ultimate martyr mother.
Sonya Blade has been crushing bones and blowing fiery kisses (and not the good kind) since Mortal Kombat’s early days. As the mother of Cassie Cage, she sets an example of strength, sacrifice, and no-nonsense parenting… I mean, if your mum can perform a Fatality, you’d probably think twice before talking back.
Cooking Mama (Cooking Mama)
Burn the food, burn the kitchen, burn the whole house down – she’ll still softly smile and tell you that it’s okay, you can do better next time.
Cooking Mama is the epitome of patience and encouragement, proving that even in the virtual world, mums will always have our backs, no matter how badly we mess up dinner. No Gordon Ramsay-style yells in this kitchen – just pure, wholesome mum energy. And I’m here for it.

Lady Dimitrescu (Resident Evil Village)
A 9’6” baddie with three blood-sucking lab experiments she calls her daughters.
Lady Dimitrescu stole the show in Resident Evil Village, towering over everyone – quite literally. She may be a villain, but her devotion to her daughters is undeniable. And, if we’re being honest, she redefined “motherly presence” in gaming. Somehow equal parts terrifying and alluring, ya know?
Anya Stroud (Gears of War)
She went from radio support to a literal war hero… then gave birth to another one.
Anya’s evolution from behind-the-scenes comms to a fully-fledged warrior makes her a standout mother in gaming. As if that’s not enough, she goes ahead and gives birth to JD Fenix, ensuring the next generation of heroes can continue the good fight. Which meant more GoW games for us. Wahoo!

Horizon (Apex Legends)
She travelled through space and time for her kid, and still finds time to school you with a gravity lift.
Dr. Mary Somers, aka Horizon, is a brilliant scientist and one of the best mobility-based Legends in Apex Legends. Her heartbreaking backstory follows her desperate attempt to reunite with her son, making her one of the most determined – and most tragic – mothers in gaming.
Freya (God of War)
Her son was literally indestructible, but it still didn’t stop her babying him.
Freya, the Norse goddess and former Valkyrie, is a complex character in God of War. She’s fiercely protective of her son, Baldur (maybe too protective?), even as their relationship spirals into tragedy. She’ll do anything to shield him from pain – even when he really, really doesn’t want her to. Love hurts, sometimes literally.

Rosa (Bayonetta)
Bayonetta had to get her over-the-top flair and high-heeled violence from somewhere.
Rosa is a powerful Umbra Witch and mother to Bayonetta, proving that combat prowess and dramatic entrances can definitely run in the family. Though her time in the spotlight is brief, her influence on her daughter is undeniable. High kicks, high stakes, high ponytails – it’s all in the genes, apparently.
EVA (Metal Gear)
Spy, biker, revolutionary… and somehow still found the time to be a surrogate mother and give birth to two boys.
EVA plays a pivotal role in the Metal Gear saga, acting as a mother figure to Solid and Liquid Snake. Between dodging bullets and surviving betrayals, she proves that motherhood isn’t for the faint of heart – especially when your kids are at the centre of a global conspiracy.

Your Mom (Pokémon games)
One thing you can rely on with Pokémon games? You’ll always say goodbye to your mum.
She won’t stop you from leaving home at ten years old to battle dangerous creatures, but she’ll make sure you have a packed lunch, a few potions, and a loving home to come back to whenever you’re ready. It’s the little things.
Clementine (Telltale’s The Walking Dead)
Had to raise herself, then had to raise another kid, all while navigating a zombie apocalypse.
Clementine’s transformation from a helpless child to a fierce protector of AJ is one of the most emotionally gripping arcs in gaming. Some say big sister, I say adoptive mother, no questions. And she proves that motherhood isn’t just biological – it’s about who you choose to protect, even when the world is crumbling around you while flesh-eating zombies want to rip you apart.

Ana (Overwatch)
Her sniper rifle says support, but her parenting style says tough love.
Ana Amari, one of the original Overwatch members, is both a skilled marksman and a devoted mother to Pharah. She believes in leading by example, even if that means disappearing for years and letting her daughter figure things out the hard way. A bit of a questionable choice, but hey, at least she’s a great shot.
Ambessa (League of Legends)
Conquering nations and crushing enemies is easy. Trying to get your daughter onside with your violence? Not so much.
Ambessa Medarda – first introduced in Arcane and later becoming a playable champ in League of Legends – is a powerful warlord with a complicated mother-daughter relationship. Although she claims to care about protecting her family, her ambition and desire for power means she gets on board with a little sacrifice if she has to. I guess not every mum expresses love with hugs and home-cooked meals; perhaps sometimes it’s through world domination?

Why Video Game Mums Steal Our Hearts on Mother’s Day
Whether they’re starting wars, defying time and space, or just making sure you’ve got clean clothes for your next quest, these video game mums show that motherhood can be as diverse and epic as the games they star in.
This Mother’s Day, let’s give a shoutout to both the virtual mamas who’ve inspired us and the real-life mums who’ve supported our gaming journeys. After all, your mum might give you a hard time, but at least she didn’t have to raise you in a zombie apocalypse.
